The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is one of the most sacred pilgrimage circuits for Hindus, comprising four revered temples – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, this yatra holds immense spiritual significance as it is believed to cleanse one's sins and pave the way to salvation (Moksha). Conducted annually, thousands of devotees embark on this journey, seeking divine blessings and experiencing the breathtaking natural beauty of the region.
The Char Dham temples remain open for only six months a year, usually from April/May to October/November, depending on weather conditions. The official opening and closing dates for 2025 are as follows:
Yamunotri Temple: Opens on Akshaya Tritiya
Gangotri Temple: Opens on Akshaya Tritiya
Kedarnath Temple: Opens on May 02, 2025
Badrinath Temple: Opens on May 04, 2025
The traditional Char Dham Yatra route follows a clockwise direction, starting from Haridwar/Rishikesh and proceeding as follows:
Haridwar/Rishikesh to Yamunotri (220 km + 6 km trek)
Drive to Janki Chatti and trek 6 km to reach Yamunotri Temple.
Yamunotri to Gangotri (230 km)
Drive to Gangotri Temple, located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River.
Gangotri to Kedarnath (250 km + 16 km trek)
Travel to Gaurikund, the base camp for the 16 km trek to Kedarnath Temple.
Helicopter services are also available for those unable to trek.
Kedarnath to Badrinath (230 km)
Drive via Joshimath to reach Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Badrinath to Rishikesh/Haridwar (300 km)
Return journey marking the completion of the yatra.
The Char Dham Yatra is not just a pilgrimage but a path to spiritual awakening. Each of the four shrines has its own religious significance:
Yamunotri: Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, believed to purify devotees and relieve them of their sins.
Gangotri: Source of the holy Ganges River, worshipped as Mother Ganga, the provider of purity and liberation.
Kedarnath: One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, symbolizing supreme power and devotion.
Badrinath: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, considered the gateway to salvation (Moksha).
The best time to undertake the Char Dham Yatra is between May and June (pre-monsoon) and September to October (post-monsoon). Monsoon months (July-August) bring heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of landslides, while October-November brings cold temperatures but offers clear skies.
Physical Fitness: Prepare for high-altitude travel by engaging in basic exercises and cardio training.
Weather Precautions: Carry woolen clothes, raincoats, and thermals as temperatures drop significantly.
Book in Advance: Accommodation and transport should be booked well in advance, especially during peak season.
Acclimatization: Spend a day in Haridwar/Rishikesh to adjust to higher altitudes.
Essential Packing: Carry medicines, dry fruits, trekking shoes, a flashlight, and personal hygiene products.
Respect Local Customs: Follow temple rules, avoid plastic, and maintain cleanliness.
Food options are limited due to the high-altitude terrain, but simple Satvik meals are available at dhabas and ashrams. Some popular food items include:
Aloo Puri & Parathas – Common breakfast items found en route.
Rajma-Chawal & Dal-Roti – Staple North Indian meals.
Kesar Halwa & Jhangore Ki Kheer – Traditional sweets of Uttarakhand.
Maggie & Tea – Readily available at trekking points.
Dried Fruits & Nuts – Best snacks to carry for energy boosts.
